Date

Site Obs
  • Site was surveyed two days after a large storm.
  • Norman creek runs through the park and flooded some of the grounds.
  • Minor storm damage, lots of sand and mud
  • Likely that storm aftermath reduced the number of visitors to the park
  • Park is very long and narrow, great walking and biking paths
  • Sporting fields run alongside the park that different groups use
  • Greenslopes Busway station next to park, would increase commuter traffic along these paths
  • 4 playgrounds
  • connects with SE Freeway bikeway
  • Bird/lizard life near creek
  • More people moving through park than stopping in park
  • People who are travelling through stop when there is something interesting to see (waterway, wildlife, storm damage)

Theses considerations
“Our modern built environment drains joy from our lives”
“Public spaces are anti-social spaces”
“Society has too many prohibitions and too few invitations”

Brisbane is a city with many green spaces and challenges the theses through its park spaces.

  • Ekibin Park has a large amount of pathways that connect parts of the city together (UQ/PAH with SE Freeway bikeway), and connects Greenslopes Busway with local housing.  This green space encourages active commuting and adds joy not drains joy
  • Parks are not anti-social spaces and encourage people to get together for a range of activities (mum’s group, bike riding, picnics, sports)
  • Points of interest with waterways and sporting fields provide a passive invitation to stop and interact but are not active or overt in its invitation
